Test coupon exclusions using representative baskets

A code can be technically valid while failing to deliver the offer described in the email. Exclusions, minimum values and automatic discounts affect redemption. Test several baskets representing real edge cases of the offer, rather than just one successful checkout.

At a glance

Turn every offer condition into a positive and negative test case. Compare the received code, product variant and checkout result. Pay particular attention to mixed baskets and discount combinations. A code displayed in a preview does not yet prove correct redemption.

Turn the offer into a test rule

Record which products qualify, the minimum value and whether shipping costs are affected. Add the start, end and eligible recipients. Use the conditions in the shop system as the working reference and compare the newsletter wording with them. For individual codes, also check that the code actually received belongs to the right offer. Do not confuse a preview placeholder with a code ready for redemption.

Include active discounts and mixed baskets

Test the code alongside offers already active in the shop. Shopify takes the relevant combination settings into account; the result depends on the existing discount and basket. A basket containing only eligible items is therefore insufficient. Add an excluded item and check which lines actually receive the discount. Review variants as well as the product name.

Illustrative example: an excluded item

A fictional shop advertises a benefit on care accessories but excludes appliances. The team tests accessories alone, an appliance alone and both together. In the mixed basket, only the eligible line should qualify. The same basket is then tested with an existing automatic discount. Expected and observed results are recorded separately. These products and rules are purely illustrative.

Check these cases before approval

  • Eligible basket: the benefit matches the advertised offer.
  • Excluded item: no accidental redemption against the wrong product.
  • Minimum value just missed and reached: conditions work at the boundary.
  • Another offer active: document the actual combination or rejection clearly.
  • Failed attempt: the message explains the reason understandably.

Keep the variant, code source, test time and result. A later question can then be compared with the state that was tested.

Resolve contradictions before sending

If the email describes a different benefit from checkout, change the offer or wording before approval. A footnote does not replace working redemption. The coupon-code guidecovers code supply and integration. Finally, have another person reproduce an intended success and an exclusion case. Only then is this particular testing task complete.
